What is a Battery Management System (BMS)?

... and why do I need one? If you have a rechargeable batttery you most likely have a BMS to support it. The BMS, at its most basic level, provides the following services:

  1. Manages the batttery environment to ensure it remains safe
  2. Monitors the state of the battery (i.e. SOC, SOH and DOD etc.)
  3. Calculates data
  4. Manages data
  5. Communicates information
  6. Optimizes the battery environment

A well designed BMS protects the primary energy source for electrified transportation. It ensures that the power source, the battery, is working optimally.
